Why, you may ask, is the library director organizing concerts? The easy answer is: because my municipality asked me to. Even if I didn't really enjoy it, I'd still do my absolute best to create what they want. However, I probably would have gotten involved even if they didn't want me. Why? Because, as I've said a million times, librarians need to be EMBEDDED in their communities. We need to sit on boards and committees and think tanks. We have a lot of work to do!
It's 5 a.m. and I leave for ALA today. I haven't packed. I have no idea where I put the suitcases when we moved last year. But it doesn't matter. ALA is such a cathartic experience for me. I spend the time frantically scribbling notes, and when I'm not in a program, I'm on my computer, emailing staff members and researching ideas. There is a buzz in my head the entire time I'm at a conference.
While at ALA, I will be sitting down and giving some time to folks interested in putting together a competency program. I have 2 spots left. If interested, just comment to this post and I'll get back to you.
Hope to see you at ALA!
