I don't remember the drive home from the library because I was deep in thought. How could I have misunderstood public awareness? I was sure I knew what it was. It's the awareness of the public. It is preaching about the services we offer, giving them personal anecdotes and reaching out to EVERYONE. But that's not public awareness at all.
My new understanding is this...public awareness is ownership. Knowing what we do is not enough. Being a part of it is the key. We added 75 Geek photos to our gallery. On Wednesday, I stopped by the Chamber of Commerce for a meeting. A man was outside walking his dog. I recognized him from our Geek gallery, but didn't know his name. So I walked up to him and said, "You geek crosswords!" Later that day, I approached a couple in the library, "You geek each other!" Ta-da! These people are now a part of the library.
